For those starting genealogy, I recommend using Brothers Keeper (BK), a free shareware program on the net that has most of the features that Family Tree Maker has, which I also have and use occasionally. It is good if you are accessing CD-Roms. Brothers Keeper adds a number to each person for an ID which is very useful when you have several people with the same name. There are also newer versions but I like the Version 5 best.
